The U.S. Department of Labor reports that every dollar spent on employee asistance programs (EAP) saves $5 to $16.
EAPs are rooted in the knowledge that personal problems impact job performance. 20 percent of workers at any given time account for 30 percent of all absenteeism. Absenteeism erodes profitability.
EAPs have a proven track record. Early intervention through confidential short-term counseling, referral and follow-up often returns troubled employees to full productivity and precludes costly medical and workers comp claims.
The programs arose in the 1940s out of concerns over employee alcoholism. They expanded in the 1970s as employers recognized that other issues — family, financial, legal, stress, and workplace conflict — also had a negative impact on employee performance.
